Building infrastructure (classrooms, laboratories, etc.)
The Department of Medicine and the Postgraduate Program have excellent new state-of-the-art building and laboratory facilities on the Alexandroupolis Campus, which are fully equipped to allow both in-person and distance learning for postgraduate students. For the Postgraduate Program «Primary Health Care: Social Medicine and Pharmaceutical Care», lectures are held in the Primary Health Care Program room «G. Stathopoulos Hall», in the Central Library building in Alexandroupolis. It is noted that all spaces are easily accessible to people with disabilities.
Information and communication services
Library
A key service for supporting learning and academic activity is the network of the Institute's libraries and especially the Medical School Library. The Central Library of the Institute monitors international bibliography and is responsible for recording the material and classifying it in the corresponding data banks. It undertakes the inter-loan of books from other libraries at home and abroad after collecting the requests of the individual branches. It is responsible for managing the HEALLink system for user access to international electronic library databases depending on the scientific field.
To serve the purposes of education and research, a unified, decentralized and independent Central Library Unit operates at the Democritus University of Thrace, called the "Library and Information Center of the Democritus University of Thrace". The Central Library (https://lib.duth.gr/) by decision of the Foundation's administration is headquartered in Komotini.
Through the Central Library website (https://opac.seab.gr/search~S4*gre) each student can search for material (books, magazines, etc.) and be informed in which of the above libraries it is located in order to proceed with its borrowing.
Electronic course support (Electronic classroom)
The training is supported by an online e-classroom system https://eclass.duth.gr/. Each course has its own electronic classroom, where, among other things, course supervision material, announcements, bibliography and more are posted. In the same system, a general bulletin board for educational topics and corresponding bulletin boards for each semester of studies operate. Postgraduate students are invited to monitor the above bulletin boards, which are used, among other things, for the definition of the exercise groups for each semester. The course and announcement websites are available to registered students and require access codes that are distributed after registration in the Department. In order to monitor the activities of each course, postgraduate students must connect to the electronic classroom system and register for the specific course.
Additional digital benefits
The University of Thessaloniki provides postgraduate students with the following Electronic Services:
Electronic account:
After registration, postgraduate students receive access details to a personal electronic institutional account (username, password). The personal account details are strictly personal and provide access to a personal email account at the University of Thessaloniki, while they are required for the processing of most services such as:
issuance of academic identity card
access to the education support system
access to the electronic library
The University of Thessaloniki has developed an extensive telephony and data network. The data network is modern and its transmission is carried out both via wired and wireless transmission, while at the same time it provides the possibility for university users to connect to services even if they are not on the university premises (e.g. access to subscription content from publishing houses). The University of Thessaloniki's Wi-Fi service is available in all areas of the University of Thessaloniki as well as in the Student Residences. At the same time, the Institution participates in eduroam, the international Wi-Fi roaming service, which in our country is operated and coordinated by the National Research and Technology Network and in which educational institutions from a total of 42 countries participate. The members of the academic community of the University of Thessaloniki who visit educational institutions participating in eduroam, as well as visitors from these institutions to the University of Thessaloniki, enjoy Wi-Fi access automatically and free of charge.
There is also the possibility of a service to access the D.U.T. data network via a virtual private network (Virtual Private Network – VPN) which offers the possibility to remote users who are connected to the internet, but outside our institution's network, to connect to it in a secure way. The benefit of this connection is that remote D.U.T. users, regardless of how they connect to the internet, enjoy the same services that they would have if they were connected directly to the D.U.T. network, such as access to subscription content from publishing houses.
Specifically, asynchronous distance learning services are provided through the DUTHNET e-class platform. This integrated Course Management System currently supports all courses of the Master of Science in Economics with the aim of enhancing the educational process, offering participants a dynamic environment of interaction and continuous communication between instructor and student. The instructor has the ability to develop his educational program electronically, while at the same time the student has the ability to access the educational material without time and space constraints. Furthermore, the University of Thessaloniki provides modern education services through the MSTeams platform, thus providing the possibility of modern distance learning.
