The Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine of the University of Thrace was founded in 1977 (Law 641/1977) and began operating in the academic year 1984-1985 (PD 573/1982) in Alexandroupolis, Thrace. Facing the adversities of the bordering University to the fullest, it has today an impressive course to demonstrate, with teaching work that fully meets the current requirements of undergraduate education and high-level postgraduate specialization, research work recognized internationally with a significant presence in the scientific press, and the provision of high-standard health services to the population of the wider region.

With continuous efforts of scientific and technological upgrading, the Department has become a pole of attraction for prestigious scientists from Greece and abroad. Today, collaborations with research and academic institutions at home and abroad are constantly increasing, as is participation in funded research and development programs. The Department also organizes a significant number of conferences and workshops contributing to scientific research and education, as well as to the cultural life of the local community.

With a strong focus on new developments and the modernization of the educational process, it has to present a particularly attractive undergraduate program for the complete training and practice of students in all areas of medical science, while it also organizes postgraduate specialization programs.

The level of health services it provides has retained the population of the wider border region, providing for the first time a significant sense of security, while it has managed to attract patients from other areas of Greece. The excellent infrastructure of the new University Hospital in Alexandroupoli also contributes to this, which creates the necessary conditions for offering high-level health services.

Finally, the Department's contribution to the cultural and spiritual life of the place should be emphasized, with intense and active participation of its members in cultural clubs and events, which enjoys acceptance and gains the support of the local community.
